Why Paper Stock Is Important

PAPER

It is measured in grams per square metre. Ranges from 80gsm to around 420gsm.

The heavier the measurement, the thicker the paper.


COATED PAPER

Paper made with a surface coating, which allows for maximum smoothness and ink

holdout to minimise dot gain in the printing process. Coated papers are classified by matt, satin, dull or gloss finishing.


UNCOATED / OFFSET PAPER

Paper made with no surface coating. Important properties include good internal

bonding, High surface strength and dimensional stability.


RECYCLED PAPER

Papers that contain post consumer waste fibre. For uncoated papers, must contain

minimum 30% of post consumer waste fibre and for coated paper. 10%.


FSC (FOREST STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL) CERTIFIED PAPER

Paper that are from well-managed forest, controlled sources, reclaimed materials

or a mixture of these. There are 3 types of FSC labels for paper:

  • FSC 100%

  • FSC Mix

  • FSC Recycled
